At this time of year, and particular with the economic climate the way it is, many of us are often looking for ways to save money or even make a little extra. If you already have a website, one obvious potential revenue source is to set yourself up as an affiliate and provide ad space on your site for other companies’ banners. You’ll then receive a commission for every sale made as a result of clickthroughs from your website. Here’s how to go about it:

1) Work out where you want to carry ads.

You’ll need to work out where best to display your selected ads so that they’re prominent enough to receive traffic but don’t interfere too strongly with the look and feel of your site. Ads need to be easily visible and accessible if people are going to click on them, but you don’t want your website to feel like a glossy mag where people have to flick past four adverts just to reach the contents page.I’ve seen sites, particularly blogs, use a right-hand sidebar to good effect here.

Consider, too, how many banners of what sort of size you wish to include. You don’t want to overwhelm visitors with a plethora of flashing things or BUY NOW! exhortations or you’ll risk losing them, but you’ll probably find that a few smaller, squarer banners (say, 250 x 250) works better for you than one vertical skyscraper that takes up most of your sidebar.

2) Choose your affiliate network

Once you’ve got an idea of where to go, the easiest way to find providers to partner with is via an affiliate network. I’ve always used TradeDoubler, but it’s worth taking a look at other networks like Commission Junction, Affiliate Window , Web Gains to see which you prefer.

There’s no reason you can’t join more than one affiliate network, but be aware that they often have minimum payout levels so if you spread your ads across several networks it may take longer to reach that threshold and actually receive a payment. You’ll need to familiarise yourself with when and how to expect payment, too. Often it’s a question of adding your bank details and then receiving an automatic monthly payment provided your accumulated balance is more than the minimum payout threshold.

3) Select the companies whose banners you want to carry

It sounds obvious, but you should be advertising things which are relevant to your readers – if, for example, you run a popular beauty blog, your readers will be more likely to be interested in ads for beauty products than for bicycles, so you’ll stand a greater chance of those ads being clicked and subsequent sales being attributed to your website.

You should find that possible companies are listed by type – in TradeDoubler, go to ‘Search’ and you can either search for specific companies or within particular industry sectors. Our beauty blog, for example, might like to start with merchants in the ‘Health and Beauty’ category. You can generally see a few stats about the average payout and commission level for each company that will help you make your decision. Once you’ve decided on the companies, you can apply to become an affiliate – you should get a notification once your application has been approved.

4) Arrange your ads

Once your application has been approved, you’ll then have access to their banner selection and the corresponding codes, so it’s time to add them to your sidebar. There may also be some simple text that you can use in normal copy – so you could, if you wished, make hyperlinks to chosen external websites into affiliate links that will generate money for you if the clicker subsequently makes a purchase.

A word of warning, though – it’s considered good manners to let readers know that a link they’re clicking is an affiliate link and could generate income for you. This is especially true if you often do product reviews or similar – your readership is less likely to trust your impartiality if they think your reviews are simply bought, and reputation is everything when it comes to maintaining a popular website. If you’ll only ever link to companies whose products you’d endorse even without payment, it’s a good idea to make a clear statement of this in an affiliate policy that you can link to where necessary.

5) Monitor results and keep things fresh

Finally, once you’ve got your affiliate ads up and running, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on things.

Just as your website can become stale if it stays the same for too long, so too can your advertising. If yours is a website which attracts frequent visits from a regular band of users, you might find that they become gradually less likely to click if they keep seeing the same things, in the same places, week after week. Many websites which carry ads have a policy of changing them, or even changing advertisers, on a monthly or quarterly basis to keep things fresh and appealing for regular readers.

It’s also a good idea to make sure your banner creatives are up to date. Plenty of merchants provide banners with details of sales or seasonal offers, and since everyone loves a bargain these are more likely to attract the attention of your readers. You’ll often get notified when new creative is available from merchants your already using – it’s well worth checking it out as it’s an easy way to update your offering.

You should also be monitoring your affiliate ads from a performance point of view on a regular basis. You’ll be to do this through your affiliate network – you should be able to see which ads are attracting clicks and sales. Here’s where it might be worth trialling different sizes and styles of ad to see which works best, and if you’ve tried a few things but someone remains a consistently poor performer that never generates interest you know to go looking for other merchants.

I’ll be honest, you’re unlikely to be able to give up your day job on the proceeds, but if you have a website you do have the opportunity to make a little extra cash. Thankfully, you don’t need to pepper your site with popup musical flash banners to see results.

Google AdSense
If you’ve ever been on a site with Google text ads sitting unobtrusively at the bottom or down the side, its owner’s making money with Google AdSense. This is a great option if you run a small business or hobby site – Google will take a look at the content of your website and deliver ads which are relevant, so there’s a greater chance of your readers being interested enough to click. You’ll be paid a portion of what the advertiser pays each time someone clicks on an ad on your site. You can adjust the format of the ads so that they stand out on your website or look more subtle, according to your preferences.

More information: Google AdSense.

Affiliate Schemes
There are a couple of different ways to earn money through affiliate schemes.

The first is to sign up directly to schemes offered by companies whose products you think will appeal to your readers.

For example, if you sign up to the Daily Affiliate Scheme and put a banner on your site (we’ll give you a choice so you can pick whatever works best for you), all you need to do is wait for the affiliate payments to start rolling in. We’ll give you a £10 credit just for joining, and then 30% on any confirmed sales resulting from clicks.

Other affiliate schemes:
Amazon
eBay
iTunes

For access to a wider variety of merchants, you could sign up to one of the big affiliate networks like TradeDoubler. Signing up is usually free and gives you the option to sift for merchants that are a good fit with your site and are offering a good rate of commission. You’ll be able to add their banners to your site and once people start to click on those you’ll generally make money on any resulting sales.
