When disaster strikes your VPS platform

When disaster strikes your VPS platform

Many of you will no doubt have seen the news articles about the nasty sounding problems that have hit a VPS platform recently:

Web host 123-reg deletes sites in clean-up error (www.bbc.co.uk/news)

UK web host 123-Reg goes TITSUP, customer servers evaporate (www.theregister.co.uk)

123 Reg delete live VPS due to “an error on the script” (www.reddit.com)

Whether you’re a home user or a business, having your websites and email wiped out ranks right up at the top of some of the worse case scenarios, so we fully sympathise with anyone who’s been affected by this.

We’ve been contacted by some of our own customers who have seen the news (along with new customers wanting to take out our VPS solutions), asking if the same could happen to us. You’ll be very glad to know that the short answer is “no”.

Our System Administrators are best placed to explain this one, who say:

“On our Hyper-V VPS Range, we hold replicas of all data volumes on a separate Storage Area Network. In the unlikely event that we went and deleted an entire VPS host’s data, we could roll the replica back to production and there would be little to no data loss. If for any reason that was problematic (again, highly unlikely), we also have separate tape backups we can restore from”

So there you have it – it really comes down to your disaster recovery plans and where you store the backup data.

The prime focus has to be minimising any impact to your customers so you need a system that caters for this. If there is a major data loss issue and it takes out your customer’s websites and email, you need to be able to get that data restored ASAP. Being down for days (or even hours) could be make or break for your customers. We understand this, which is why we’ve invested heavily in data protection and will continue to do so.

If you’re thinking of hosting your VPS solution with us at Daily, we’re currently running a 20% off all our yearly High Performance VPS packages for the rest of April, so now’s a great time to join us and be confident that your data is in safe hands!
